Good design for good health.

The Health by Design Lab is a research group using design thinking and systems-level approaches to understand, investigate, evaluate, and solve complex public health challenges. We design and assess information and places – and the systems that shape them – to promote health and prevent disease at the population level.

Health Information

Information has a powerful influence on health, but it must be designed to be accessible, understandable, and accurate. How people find, use, and are influenced by health information is a key area of focus. We research:

  • Health communication, risk communication, and visual communication
  • Health mis- and dis-information
  • Social media and health information

Built Environment & Health

Where we live, work, learn, and play impacts our health profoundly. Depending on its design and characteristics, the built environment can support health or hinder it, and is a key area of focus. We research:

  • Climate adaptation in the built environment, especially shade for heat mitigation and UV protection
  • Built environment and health policy
  • Public health and environmental equity
